This study presents a literature review aimed at analyzing the orthodontic approach to dental agenesis, detailing diagnosis, treatment planning, and possibilities for aesthetic rehabilitation. Dental agenesis, the most prevalent congenital anomaly, primarily affects third molars, maxillary lateral incisors, and mandibular premolars. The methodology employed was an analytical and descriptive literature review, with a search for recent articles in Portuguese or English in the SCIELO, PubMed, LILACS, and Google Scholar databases. The review demonstrates that diagnosis requires clinical and imaging examinations, such as Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), and the condition is classified as hypodontia, oligodontia, or anodontia. Treatment planning is individualized, with options including space closure or space opening for future rehabilitation with prostheses, implants, or autotransplantation, considering the patient’s age and facial profile. It was concluded that clinical success is strongly dependent on a coordinated multidisciplinary approach that integrates Orthodontics, Periodontics, and Rehabilitation. Furthermore, the incorporation of new technologies, such as 3D digital planning and the use of biomaterials, is crucial to increase the precision and predictability of long-term outcomes, ensuring durable functional and aesthetic rehabilitation.
