Humanization strategies in nursing care practice for terminally ill patients: an integrative review

The terminal phase of an illness presents complex challenges to nursing, going beyond the clinical control of symptoms and demanding ethical sensitivity, empathy, and respect for human dignity. Palliative care, as defined by the World Health Organization, prioritizes the prevention and relief of physical, psychosocial, and spiritual suffering. In the Brazilian context, the National Palliative Care Policy reinforces humanization as the structuring principle of care. This study seeks to evaluate the scientific literature on humanization strategies developed by nursing in the management of terminally ill patients. The methodology consists of an Integrative Literature Review conducted in the SciELO, LILACS, MEDLINE/PubMed, and BDENF databases, using DeCS/MeSH descriptors combined with Boolean operators. Articles published between 2013 and 2025 that addressed care practices focused on a humanized approach to end-of-life care were included. The analysis of the results demonstrated that empathetic therapeutic communication, structured protocols for delivering bad news, symptom management based on validated scales, comfort interventions, respect for spirituality, and inclusion of the family in decision-making constitute central elements of care. The relevance of continuing education and evidence-based practice to improve care is also highlighted. However, gaps remain in the evaluation of patient experience outcomes and the cost-effectiveness of interventions. Therefore, it is considered that humanization in nursing care at the end of life requires a comprehensive, ethical, and interdisciplinary approach, oriented towards strengthening autonomy and dignity at the end of life.
