Abstract

This article addresses the issue of productivity, not as a purely mechanical phenomenon, but as a result of properly oriented human action. The general objective of this research is to analyze performance evaluation (PE) as a strategic instrument capable of enhancing organizational productivity. To this end, the specific objectives defined were understanding the evolution of Human Resource Management, exploring the conceptual complexity of productivity, and identifying the PE mechanisms that directly impact the results of institutions. The methodology adopted is characterized as bibliographic research, of a theoretical and exploratory nature, with a qualitative approach. The methodological path was structured in three phases: survey and selection of seminal and contemporary works; organization of data by thematic axes (strategic, operational, human, and systemic); and critical analysis using the Content Analysis technique, synthesized in a Transversal Synthesis Table. Regarding its structure, the article is organized into logical sections that guide the reader from the theoretical foundation to the integrative synthesis. Initially, the evolution of HR and the genesis of productivity from a strategic perspective are discussed. The following is an analysis of the conceptual complexity of productivity, addressing OECD technical definitions and sustainability perspectives. Subsequently, the text details the definitions and purposes of performance appraisal, culminating in an analysis of its direct relationship with productivity and the presentation of a summary table of the authors' contributions. The results reveal that performance appraisal acts as a calibration mechanism that aligns individual aspirations with organizational objectives through tools such as feedback and talent scouting. The conclusions indicate that true organizational prosperity is only achieved when the growth of outputs exceeds that of resources consumed, something enhanced by management that promotes innovation and procedural fairness. In short, the study reaffirms that performance appraisal is the indispensable engine for sustainability and competitiveness in the global market.
