Mental load in the postpartum period: implications for nursing care in primary health care

Mental load in the postpartum period has emerged as a significant challenge to maternal health, particularly within Primary Health Care (PHC). This study aimed to analyze, through an integrative literature review, the implications of postpartum mental load for nursing care in PHC. The search was conducted in PubMed, BVS and Google Scholar databases, using descriptors related to postpartum period, mental health, and primary care, covering the period from 2019 to 2025. Original studies, reviews, and qualitative research published in Portuguese, English, and Spanish were included. Findings indicate that mental load is associated with unequal distribution of domestic work, sleep deprivation, emotional demands, and lack of social support, contributing to psychological distress, anxiety, and postpartum depression. Nursing plays a strategic role in PHC through early identification, qualified listening, and implementation of educational and psychosocial interventions. It is concluded that integrating maternal mental health into postpartum care is essential to improve healthcare quality and reduce adverse outcomes, requiring expanded interdisciplinary strategies within public health systems.
