Abstract

Family businesses play a fundamental role in the Brazilian economy, being responsible for a large share of existing organizations and contributing significantly to the generation of employment and income. Despite this relevance, many of these companies face difficulties related to business continuity across generations. The succession process is considered one of the main challenges faced by this type of organization, as it involves the transfer of leadership, ownership, and responsibility among family members, in addition to emotional, cultural, and strategic factors. In this context, the present study aims to analyze the challenges of succession in family businesses in Brazil. The research is characterized as qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive in nature, based on a literature review and analysis of institutional data. The results indicate that the absence of succession planning, the lack of management professionalization, and family conflicts are the main factors that hinder the continuity of these organizations across generations.
