Abstract

Objective: To report on the experience of a university extension project aimed at promoting women's health, with a focus on preventing cervical cancer. The initiative was developed at a Basic Health Unit located in the Vila Fátima neighborhood, in Juazeiro do Norte, with the aim of expanding access to information, encouraging women to take Pap smears, and strengthening women's autonomy in relation to their health. Case description: An educational workshop was held using accessible language and participatory methodologies, such as discussion groups, group dynamics, and distribution of informative materials. The action involved university students and women from the community, creating a space for listening, welcoming, and exchanging knowledge. Comments: The experience contributed significantly to the critical education of students and to strengthening the autonomy of participants by promoting awareness about self-care, breaking taboos, and disease prevention. It was found that health education actions are essential to reduce inequalities, promote equity in health, and guarantee women's right to information and comprehensive care.
