Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged immobility in bedridden patients is associated with complications such as joint contractures, pressure ulcers, sarcopenia, and bone demineralization, compromising quality of life and recovery. Occupational Therapy contributes to the prevention of these conditions through proper positioning, functional stimulation of the upper limbs, and the fabrication of orthoses and assistive technologies. OBJECTIVE: This report describes the development of a low-cost elbow blocker, highlighting its production stages, intended functionality, and potential applicability in the hospital setting. METHODOLOGY: This is a descriptive experience report developed from professional practice in a hospital context, in a ward of a high-complexity hospital in São José do Rio Preto – SP, involving direct observation, documentation of fabrication stages, and analysis of the materials used, grounded in professional practice. RESULTS/DISCUSSION: The elbow blocker showed partial effectiveness in maintaining elbow extension, resistance to frequent use, lightness, malleability, ease of transport, and simple maintenance. The average production time ranged from 5 to 10 minutes, and placement time from 3 to 5 minutes, requiring assistance from a professional or caregiver. Good acceptance was observed among conscious patients and their companions, although adherence by the nursing staff required awareness-raising strategies. CONCLUSION: The report demonstrates that simple, accessible, and low-cost solutions can be effective, safe, and applicable in different hospital contexts, reinforcing the relevance of Occupational Therapy in promoting comfort, preventing deformities, and maintaining the functionality of bedridden patients.
