PALLIATIVE CARE IN ALZHEIMER'S PATIENTS

Global population aging has increased the prevalence of Alzheimer's Disease (AD), the leading cause of dementia, characterized by progressive cognitive and physical decline. Given the incurability and growing suffering, Palliative Care (PC) emerges as the most appropriate approach to prioritize comfort, dignity, and quality of life. Although palliative assistance in AD is widely associated with medicine and nursing, the role of Physiotherapy is indispensable in managing the multiple physical symptoms that affect the well-being of patients in advanced stages, such as immobility, risk of contractures, pressure ulcers, and pain. This article aims to analyze, in depth, the relevance and strategies of Physiotherapy within the context of Palliative Care applied to patients in advanced stages of AD. This study is an Integrative Literature Review (ILR), consulting databases such as SciELO, LILACS, PEDro, and MEDLINE, using the descriptors "Physiotherapy," "Palliative Care," and "Alzheimer's Disease." Preliminary results and the analyzed literature reinforce that physiotherapeutic interventions, focused on promoting comfort, symptomatic control, and maintaining residual function, are an essential pillar of palliative assistance. It is concluded that the physiotherapist contributes significantly to the improvement of the patient's quality of life and dignity until the final moments, making the appreciation and inclusion of this approach fundamental within the multidisciplinary team.
