Functional and aesthetic repercussions in the treatment of ramus and chin fractures of the mandible: a case report

The mandible, the only movable bone in the face, plays an essential role in oral functions and the aesthetic composition of the lower third of the face. Its integrity is fundamental for adequate masticatory, phonetic, and aesthetic performance. However, due to its anatomical position and the forces exerted by the masticatory muscles, it is one of the structures most susceptible to fractures. These injuries can significantly compromise mandibular function and facial harmony, requiring accurate diagnosis and appropriate intervention to ensure functional and aesthetic restoration. This paper reports a clinical case of mandibular fracture affecting the ramus and mentum, addressing the main clinical and radiographic aspects involved in the diagnosis, as well as the therapeutic approach employed, prevention of future complications, and postoperative follow-up. Treatment was performed through open reduction and internal fixation of the bone fragments, aiming at the functional and aesthetic rehabilitation of the patient. During follow-up, parameters such as mouth opening range, occlusion, mastication, and facial symmetry were evaluated, observing favorable evolution and restoration of orofacial functions. The case analysis, complemented by a literature review, reinforces the importance of individualized clinical management that considers both anatomical and functional aspects as well as the psychosocial impact of mandibular fractures. The study contributes to the improvement of therapeutic approaches in maxillofacial traumatology and highlights the relevance of preventing facial trauma, especially those resulting from car accidents.
